Competitor Keyword Analysis for Startups: Find What They Rank For
Your competitor already figured out which keywords bring customers. Here's how to discover their top Google keywords without paying for Ahrefs.
Keyword research from scratch is slow. Competitor keyword analysis is faster: find what already works for a rival in your space, then build pages to compete for those same searches.
What is competitor keyword analysis?
It's the process of identifying which search terms your competitors rank for on Google — especially keywords where they appear in the top 10 and you don't. These are proven demand signals: real people search these terms, and Google trusts your rival to answer them.
How to find competitor keywords (free methods)
1. Look at their page titles in Google
Search site:competitor.com on Google. The pages Google surfaces first are their strongest. Each page title reveals a keyword they target — "SSC CGL Mock Test 2026" tells you exactly what they rank for.
2. Check their blog and landing pages
Every URL slug is a keyword bet. /billing-software-startups, /free-mock-test, /vs-competitor-name — these are intentional SEO pages.
3. Use an automated keyword gap tool
Growlit discovers competitor keywords automatically: we pull their top indexed pages, extract keywords, check live Google positions for both of you, and highlight gaps where they rank and you don't.
What to do with competitor keywords
- Don't copy content — copy the structure. See what their ranking page covers, then write something better.
- Build a dedicated page for each high-value gap keyword.
- Start with keywords where they rank #3–10 (easier to beat than #1).
- Track movement monthly after publishing.
Focus on 5 keywords max at first. Spreading thin across 50 keywords means none of them rank.
